Crew

Perhaps somewhat overdue in introducing my “crew”, or, perhaps more appropriately, The Team! Indeed, these folks, none of them, can be accused of belonging to someone else – they are, individuals all, friends I am honored and pleased to have. So, without further adieu…

Victoria to Maui

Doug Green – Tactician
Author extraordinaire of the Chronicles of “The Scotia Thistle”, Scaurend, and other would-be vessels! Has plied a goodly percentage of the 7 seas, all the while making extraordinary music, endless patter and great meals! Shares the latter responsibility with the “Australian Lad – Pearson”. Has sailed in the Caribbean, Sea of Cortez, Pacific Northwest, Tonga and Greece. As comfortable underwater as on top. Claim to fame extraordinaire is purveyor of hot sauces! Dougie will be Chief Tactician, rules man, and purveyor of fine foods.

Neil Herbst – 2nd Mate
Brewmaster (Alley Kat Brewing Company), sailor and storyteller, that’s Neil. Second Mate and in charge of safety and communications – Neil will satisfy the committee of our ability to leave the decks! And, we shall! Neil’s wealth of experience of inland lakes and on the Pacific Northwest will be invaluable. His knowledge of fine beers (and wines) irreplaceable. Neil will use his many skills to assist all aboard in daily duties, including being solely responsible for weather forecasts, communications and fair winds!

Mike Iverson

Mike Iverson – Joint Chief of Staff, Welcoming — Hawaii
What more can be said about the greatest guy who has sailed with me, other than, he knows where everything is (except for 96 beers!), and he takes care of all of us as if we were his own! With Dr. Melino, Mike will ready the welcome as we arrive in Maui – and what an arrival it will be! Mike has sailed on every sail from the Pacific Northwest to Tonga and beyond. His smile at the end of the dock as we arrive will be candy to the crew!

Kenny Lane

Kenny Lane – Chief Engineer
Australian Lad II, and completely new to the crew – has sailed with the Captain on the fair Scaurend in the Pacific Northwest and has taken his own crew on Scaurend, and has some of the best sails logged in the Logbook! With his knowledge of things electrical and mechanical and his prowess with diesels, he is the natural ship's Engineer! Kenny’s feats as an ultra marathoner and marathoner are such as to give quiet confidence to his ability to help us give our best!

Gerry Melino

Gerry Melino – Joint Chief of Staff, Welcoming — Hawaii
Joined us in Greece and again for our summer sail from Bellingham to Bamfield and return! Directly responsible for having us challenge Canadian Customs authority! His jokes and knowledge go on forever! His friendship even further! Will assist the Captain and Dr. Yoneda in outfitting the ship's medicine chest, and most importantly will co-host, with Dr. Iverson, our Maui arrival! Gerry will be directly responsible for having a harem of hula dancers “hula-ing” on the dock as we arrive! Gerry’s photos provide our Web page with unmatched beauty.

Keir Pearsonon

Keir Pearson – 1st Mate
Scuba diver, scientist, runner, beer maker, musician, our First Mate and second in command! Will create ship's menu and the crew “rotation”, and as required, will take control of Scaurend II. Has sailed throughout the past 15–20 years with the Captain and crew. Most recently, studying diligently (with the ship's doctor) celestial and coastal navigation. A force to be reckoned with.

Abe Rempel

Abe Rempel – Navigator
Teacher, old hippy, carpenter, farmer, contractor, sailord – what a man! Our shipright! Our navigator. Our man, who with the Chief Engineer, will get us safely to Maui! Has sailed the Pacific Northwest extensively. Abe has read everything there is to read to get us safely and comfortably there!

Janet Yoneda – Crew and ship's Doc
Our contract player, our ship's Doc, our inner spirit! What a lady – against all odds she made it, and will be a wonderful addition to Scaurend II. She has sailed extensively in the Pacific Northwest and won her wings in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. She will be responsible for the crew’s health and for the trip’s photography.

By the time departure comes to pass, there will be many others who will contribute, and will be part of “The Team” – without exception, they will be friends, and people upon whom I can fully rely. They will be people who add to life, rather than take from life!

So, for the moment, that is “The Team” – I am proud to call them all friends, I am pleased to share the first leg of this new adventure with them, and I trust each of them explicitly. Finally, I am humbled by the trust and confidence they have reposed in me.

Beginning is easy – continuing is hard.
